Most of those volcanic necks have little pueblo rock houses on top. They were chosen for their defensive positions. The meandering Rio Puerco river winds through the volcanic necks, which exposed the the lava peaks over millions of years, when it was much greater in size. The ancient people grew crops in the Rio Puerco arroyo, hunted rabbits and other small animals and drug timber from nearby Mount Taylor for their roof structures. Life was hard and short. (It was an overcast sky, which enabled a cooler jeep drive and hike into the life renewing open spaces.)
