TOO COLD FOR HORNO OVEN BREAD ———

Only the hearty bread makers brush the snow off the hornos and stuff them with sticks to make a fire, which heats the Adobe up hot enough to put freshly kneeded bread in. That couple lived next to the old Isleta Church and supplied bread even on wintry days. Barbara, the wife, was very kind and caring and helped people in many ways. The husband worked hard to gather sticks along the Bosque near the river and got up early to start the horno fires. They had two young women from the pueblo now helping selling the bread to tourists and the pueblo people’s. We came on one snowy Sunday morning and ate hot bread with butter while sitting in the car in front of the old Church. Within the home they sold pottery, jewelry and other arts and crafts, even a few paintings of the church.
