We had a choice of horses or walking and chose the latter; so we could stop and check out fossils and shards. A few years ago a prehistoric turtle was uncovered in the Rio Puerco. “Arroyos are where history is revealed.”
Arroyos are where seeds from many flowers and plants are washed into, where animals come to drink, while still flowing, and where the roots and branches of bushes have been twisted by sudden torrents of water during a storm. Add the natural colors of red sand, dark green piñon and juniper trees, blue green chamisa and white gypsum or black iron deposits and you have a beautiful composition. Actually, this picture and the next expresses it all.
