MILLIONS OF YEARS AGO ————-

Sixty five years ago our family stood at the base of Cabezon Peak on one of our first trips around New Mexico. Many times since have I and my sister have traveled to this ancient landmark, once I climbing up on the southeast side called the chimney. This volcanic neck can be seen from a hundred miles away and was also a landmark to guide early settlers traveling west from the east. It is a hot and desolate area, Cabezon only one of fifty other volcanoes. The Rio Puerco eroded the earth away from the necks along with shallow seas. The ancient people left markings on the lava rocks for us to see as we wandered the mesas. You know when you’re viewing something significant, you just quietly stare for awhile.
